Housing
Social housing
Sometimes referred to as council housing, this is provided by your local council. Both Moray and Highland have adapted their housing policies to remove disadvantage for members of the Armed Forces community. This doesn’t mean you have priority over a civilian with similar personal circumstances rather that you’ll be treated on an equal basis.
Each council has its own housing policies so it’s important to understand the way the application process works in your area. Make an appointment with your local Council housing options officer to look at what is best for you.
In Moray if you’re leaving the service and currently live in service families or single living accommodation you are considered to be leaving ‘tied accommodation’. Providing you submit an application for social housing before quitting your service accommodation you will be awarded additional allocation points. However, if your circumstances change before moving you may lose your entitlement, so make sure you understand how the system works.
In Highland ex-service personnel who are leaving or have just left the Armed Forces will be given Need to Reside priority regardless of it they have lived in the Highlands or not. Service personnel leaving armed forces accommodation will be given the same priority as a person who has received a Notice to Leave from their private let.
